This paper explores the pedagogic implications of teaching film as an art form. The paper investigates through a discussion of new research on film learning how the area can be taught with making and appreciating intertwined. The concepts of aesthetic control and aesthetic understanding are discussed with reference to a new model of film learning that rejects technicist pedagogical approaches and embraces the tradition of arts learning. The paper also discusses how approaching film learning in this way leads to learning that is mediated socio-culturally and can potentially conform to the notion of flow.

Dr Michael Anderson

Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney

Michael teaches and researches in media, drama, learning and education at the University of Sydney and is co-convenor of the Arts, English, Literacy and Education Research Network. Michael's research interests include drama and English pedagogy, creativity, screen learning and theatre for young people. He has recently co-written Teaching the Screen: Film Education for Generation Next (2009) and co-edited Drama in the English Classroom (2008). In 2002 he completed his PhD, which explored the professional-development journeys of four drama educators. His thesis, Journeys in Teacher Professional Development: Narratives of Four Drama Educators, won the American Association for Theatre Educators Distinguished Dissertation award in 2003. That same year Michael also received the NSW Minister for Education and The Australian College of Educators Quality Teaching Award. Michael is author of several publications including Real Players: Drama, Technology and Education (2006), the first publication of its kind, and Solo: A guidebook to individual performance. Michael is currently working on further publications in drama, ICT and drama teachers and professional development.

Miranda Jefferson

Miranda teaches in drama curriculum and film learning in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. Miranda is a member of the Arts, English and Literacy Education Research Network and her research involves creativity, literacy, drama and film learning. Currently her research focus is the development and implementation of creative arts and literacy learning and pedagogy in schools. With Dr Michael Anderson, she has co-written Teaching the Screen: Film Education for Generation Next (2009). She is supervisor of marking for HSC drama in NSW, and has been a Board of Studies syllabus writer (Years 7–10 and HSC drama) and head teacher of film and drama at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (a leading school in creative-arts education development and innovation). She is committed to student learning and empowerment through theatre and film productions and many of her works have been performed and exhibited at festivals and conferences at a state, national and international level. Miranda recently received an Outstanding Professional Service Award for drama education.
