Graphic Design of Child Magazines in Turkey

Variety in magazines, publishing periodically, where information and thoughts about specific topics to specific targets are conveyed is increasing with each passing day. Child magazines are printed means of communication for improving child’s analytical thinking, language and reading skills; for streamlining the time spent outside the school; and for teaching and entertaining child.

Printed means of communication endeavors to convey the messages to the readers and arouse their interests. Presenting the message is important in conveying the message. Therefore, the printed means of communication require a well graphic design to be able to transfer the messages to its readers in a fast and effective way. Topical subjects in child magazines should be presented within modern taste by modern materials. In design process, creativity is integrated with knowledge and transferred into the communication environment. The designer needs to know the pedagogical features of target readers intimately in order to design his works facilitating the message, which enhances the visual images in child magazines, passing to target readers and he needs to design according to the interests, needs and likes of the age group. However, it is conspicuous in some of the child magazines in Turkey that there are design problems.

In this study, the graphic designs of the child magazines being published in Turkey are going to be examined, the basic design problems are going to be put forth and solutions are going to be proposed.
